Learning to read is a long way off yet for my 3-year-old preschooler. But introducing beginning letter sounds through activities is a fun first step into literacy!

My three year old is officially a preschooler this year and he’s beginning to learn letter sounds.

This is new for him since phonics isn’t something I think about much at home.

It doesn’t seem as concrete of a subject as learning the letters themselves.

But probably teaching beginning letter sounds are arguably more important.

This is a learning beginning letter sounds activity I came up with at home that is very simple and it really has to do with the questions asked.

What You’ll Need to Make Your Own Beginning Sound Literacy Activity:

1. Cardstock or construction paper in different colors.
2. Marker
3. Scissors

How to Make a Beginning Letter Sound Activity for Preschoolers

I began by cutting the cardstock paper into small squares, about six of each color.

On each color, I wrote a letter.

I wrote the same letter on all of the squares of the same color.

I used the different colors as a helpful hint of the letter.

Bext, I chose three letters to work on beginning letter sounds.

I chose two letter sounds that he was familiar with and one that was new to teach him.

How to Find the Beginning Letter Sounds Activity:

Before beginning the activity, I laid out one of each of the letter cards I made and talked about the sounds they make with my preschooler.

Then I spread out the squares or cards of letters in a pile on the floor.

I would ask him questions: “What sounds does the word B-B-Boat start with? B-B-Boat.”

My preschooler would search through the pile and find the winning letter sound.

Of course, he didn’t always get it right.

In that case, I repeated the word, emphasizing the beginning letter sound.

I’d also say things like: “That’s the T. T-T-Tee. Truck starts with T! What does B-B-Boat start with? B-B-B.”

We played this game over and over again practicing with different words.

And then again with a different set of three letter cards.

Again, choosing two that I thought he was somewhat familiar with (its all pretty new to him at this point, so being somewhat familiar is kind of a stretch) and one that was a bit harder for him.

Try this Advanced Go Fish Game to Learn Letter Sounds

My preschooler isn’t quite ready for this beginning letter sounds activity yet.

But, this would be super fun for an advanced preschooler or kindergartener that knows his letter sounds a little bit better.

Make it a game of Beginning Sounds Go Fish!

Put the letter cards on the floor upside down.

Each of you choose 3 cards.

And ask each other to make a match.

Do you have an “m”?

Or… Do you have the letter that B-B-Boat starts with

No. Go Fish!
